Volunteer Opportunities

SPRED Catechists Needed: SPRED (Special Religious Development) provides religious development and education through spiritual movement, music, and Liturgical words for people with special needs. SPRED catechists do not need any educational or special needs experience. Many of our catechists have never worked with children with special needs. They have quickly discovered the joy and love that our friends give us during each session we share together. We meet once a week October through April. We need catechists for both our 6-10 age group (Wednesday nights) and our 11-16 age group (Monday nights). If you are able to volunteer your time or wish to learn more, please contact Kelly Corrigan at (847) 726-4742 or businessoffice@stfrancislz.org.

Life Teen Youth Ministry: Our Youth Ministry Program is currently in need of volunteers to serve in a variety of capacities, including serving as Confirmation leaders and/or helping with Life Teen Mass, Life Nights, retreats, Wednesday Night Adoration, and our Prayer Team. For a full list of these opportunities, please click here.

Help Wanted on Sunday Mornings: We are currently in need of adult volunteers who are willing to give up 20-25 minutes for our children once a month during the 11 a.m. Mass. If you’re a regular at the 11 a.m. Mass, you know that during the school year children in preschool through 1st grade are dismissed every week for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. The children hear the Gospel, talk about it on their level, and then return to their parents after the Prayer of the Faithful.  Volunteers lead one session each month and receive copies of the readings, session outlines, and activity sheets in advance. If you enjoy working with kids, please consider helping with this wonderful ministry.  If you are willing to help or want more information, please call Kathy at 847-726-4850 or
e-mail KBradyMurfin@stfrancislz.org.

Religious Education Catechists Needed: We are in need of catechists for all grades and sessions in our Religious Education Program. If you enjoy both children and your faith, we ask that you prayerfully consider being a part of this important ministry. Training, support, and ongoing encouragement are provided. Please call the Religious Education Office, 847-726-4850, to volunteer or to request further information. We can't do it with you!

Catechists Needed (1st Year Confirmation): The Confirmation program at St. Francis de Sales is in need of volunteer 1st year (freshmen) Confirmation Leaders. Classes meet 9 to 10 times a year and once or twice a month September to April on Sunday evenings from 4:45 to 8 p.m. Leaders will lead the teens in discussions, activities, and faith formation in the Life Teen Confirmation Program. Leaders will need to arrive by 4:45 p.m. on the designated Sundays to greet teens as they arrive for Mass/class. Group Leaders will also need to attend a Group Leaders' meeting, once or twice a month, to help prepare to teach the lesson planned for class. This meeting is held the week before the scheduled Sunday class is to take place. Lesson plans for the entire school year are given to leaders in advance for your review before the Leaders' meeting. As a Confirmation leader, you are welcome to co-lead a class with your spouse or a friend.

Life Night Volunteers Needed: The St. Francis de Sales Youth Ministry program is also in need of volunteers to assist with Life Teen NIghts (Sundays). Volunteers would assist the Life Night Team and help lead discussions, activities, and faith formation for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. You can help lead discussions weekly, monthly, or quarterly as your schedule allows. Life Nights are held every Sunday night with the exception of holiday or Holy Day weekends, Mother's Day, and Father's Day.

Five Minutes a Day to Feed the Hungry: Emmaus House of Hospitality, a ministry at St. Francis de Sales, has a volunteer job opening for Food Rescue Coordinator. This assignment assists an existing network of volunteers who pick up donated food at local food vendors. The job essentially is checking e-mail and phone for messages from volunteers and ensuring that all pick-up commitments are made. Please call Bob Gorman at (847) 322-5176 for information.

Help Picking Up at Deerfield Bakery in Buffalo Grove: Every Sunday at 1:45 p.m., Deerfield Bakery donates cakes, pastries, bagels, and other bread and confectionary products. These are distributed at the Sunday Community Dinner held every Sunday in Fr. Valker Hall. Emmaus House needs several volunteers to accept an assignment for one Sunday a month, picking up at Deerfield Bakery in Buffalo Grove and delivering to Fr. Valker Hall. Please call Bob Gorman for more details at (847) 322-5176.
